IN THE SYDNEY STINGERS
IN THE SYDNEY STINGERS
The Sydney Stingers launched our first two womens' teams in April 2018, and we're looking for more new members to join us in the upcoming Winter 2019 season. Whether you want to play competitively or just learn & train, we'd love to have you with us!
We're a fun, friendly LGBTIQ-inclusive club that welcomes both new and experienced players. We aim to create a supportive and enjoyable environment while we train, play & challenge ourselves.
No, not at all - everyone is welcome. But please be aware that our club is an LGBTIQ-friendly environment.
One team in the L4 grade – for experienced players with solid water polo skills and intermediate/advanced levels of fitness.
Two teams in the L5 grade – for beginners & those working to build their core water polo skills and improve their fitness.
Our team make-up for Winter 2019 is not yet finalised, but we expect that it will include at least two L5 teams (for beginner and intermediate players), and one or more L4, L3 and L1/L2 teams (for more experienced players).
No, but you need to be a strong swimmer. You should be able to swim at least 1-2km, and be able to tread water unassisted.
We train on Saturday mornings at Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre. Training runs for 90 mins each session.
Games in the Winter 2019 season will be held on Wednesday evenings for L3 and below grades, and Saturday Afternoons for the L1/L2 grade. The season runs from mid-May through to late August. Venues are not yet finalised, but are likely to include Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre, Macquarie University, Auburn Aquatic Centre and the University of Sydney.
You'll need to pay normal pool entry fees for games and training sessions. Members receive discounted pool entry for games and training at our home pool, Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre. All other club membership expenses are covered by your membership fee - see below.
The best way to get into the Sydney Stingers is to attend one of our twice-yearly Water Polo Boot Camps.
Our next boot camp runs over four sessions this March-April, and is suitable for beginners who already have strong swimming skills. Experienced water polo players are also encouraged to participate as a skills refresher, and in order to get to know our club and your fellow new recruits.
Our Autumn 2019 boot camp will run over 4 sessions in March-April, with dates/times as follows:
Session 1 – Sunday March 24, 10:00 to 1:00pm (incl. BBQ Lunch)
Session 2 – Saturday March 30, 10:00am to 12:00pm
Session 3 – Saturday April 6, 10:00 to 12:00pm
Session 4 – Saturday April 13, 10:00 to 12:00pm
We'll also hold a number of social events throughout the program. The cost is $50 for the entire course or part thereof, plus pool entry fee of $6.40 each week. Attendance at all sessions is preferred (but not mandatory).
All sessions are held at our home pool, Ryde Aquatic Leisure Centre. There is no obligation to join the club at the end of the course, but we'll be glad to discuss membership with you if you're interested!
Membership fees cover costs incurred by the club including coaches, pool hire, new equipment and general running costs. Fees are subsided through active fundraising and sponsorship and represent excellent value for money to members – we're cheaper than many of the other Sydney-based water polo clubs!
For new members joining for the 2019 Winter Season (the months of May through August), we offer half-year membership fees as follows:
Affiliate membership (winter season) - $190*: Affiliates attend weekly training sessions and are welcome to participate in all club activities (incl. mid-week swim training).
Full membership (winter season) - $250*: Full Members attend weekly training sessions, are welcome to participate in all club activities, and are registered to play in the Water Polo NSW Metropolitan competition.
Membership at either level includes insurance cover through Water Polo Australia.
* Winter memberships are valid for the 2019 winter season and expire September 1st, 2019, at which time members must purchase a full-year membership ($380 affiliate, $500 full member) if they wish to continue training and/or competing with us. Fees quoted on this page are correct as of March 2019, and are subject to change.
